Elliott Maddox- born December 21, 1948, in East Orange, New Jersey, and grew up in Union. At age nine, he his older brother, Willie, into Union Little League. While at Union High school he played short stop and third. He batted cleanup and powered the school team to the state championship in 1966. Scholarship offers arrived from over a hundred universities, including Columbia and Brown. He chose Michigan due to its combined strength in academics and athletics, and proximity to relatives in Detroit.
In 1968, as a college sophomore, the first year students were eligible to play varsity, Maddox won the NCAA Big Ten batting title with an astonishing .467 average. That same year, he was the number one, second round draft pick for the Detroit Tigers. He was headed for medical school at the time, but switched his major to history, as it was impossible to complete the pre-med curriculum and play baseball at the same time.

Eulace Peacock (August 27, 1914 - December 13, 1996) was an American track and field athlete in the 1930s.
Born in Dothan, Alabama and raised in Union, New Jersey, he became a rival to Jesse Owens in many sprinting competitions. Peacock won the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) outdoor pentathlon championship six times, in 1934, 1935, 1937, and from 1943 through 1945.[1] After pulling a hamstring muscle, he was unable to compete in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany.
In 1942 he served in the US Coast Guard; in later years he opened a liquor store and a car-rental business. He stayed connected with athletics by officiating at championship events and Olympic qualifying trials. He has been honoured by a number of athletic bodies, including the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.
Eulace Peacock died of Alzheimer's disease at age 82 in Yonkers and was interred in Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, NY.
In a television interview at Union High School in 1983, Eulace Peacock stated that the secret to success was hard work and concentration. “You have to sacrifice in order to make it,”
